JOHANNA-ADELE JÜSSI
An Estonian fiddler living in the Arctic Norway playing traditional tunes from
the Lynx Valley – an utopian place found in a dream.
Johanna-Adele Jüssi is a contemporary tradition bearer from Estonia, currently living in Norway. Her expression is both elegant and raw, it tells a story and weaves a spell. She plays old and new traditional tunes from the North. Whether she plays for dancing or listening, Johanna-Adele is always in the present, creating the moment, filling it with meaning. Jüssi has an MA in Nordic Folk music, the studies for which took her to Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland, and a BA in traditional Estonian fiddle music from University of Tartu Viljandi Culture Academy.
Slåtter fra Gaupdalen – Tunes from the Lynx Valley
"Once, in a dream, a friend told me about her fantastic home area, Lynx Valley. I immediately fell in love with the place and felt a strong sense of belonging. I had suddenly found the place where I wanted to live, where my musical wanderings could rest and develop further. When I woke up, I couldn’t remember what the valley looked like or where it was, but I remained completely infatuated with it."

Tunes from Lynx Valley, a commissioned work for the festival Kalottspel in 2021, is a trilogy that embraces Estonian and Norwegian traditional tunes alongside newly-written folk music. The music is released under the record company Ta:lik.
